Hibachi Kyoto Warming Coffee Table $SOLD
Japanese Kyoto-style keyaki (zelcova), also known as “naga-hibachi” (long firebox), hibachi. Equipped within the body are three copper pans as such a piece would traditionally function as a heater for multple purposes: 1) heating sake, boiling water for tea, and providing heating for guests in the winterized Japanese home. Hibachi were originally used by the samurai and aristocrat classes but gradually spread amongst all working classes. Their design developed throughout the Edo period. When it spread to the other classes, hibachi use also became diversified, serving as a portable heater before oil heater technology was introduced.
With a pair of wood lids and a single glass lid over the three copper pans, the hibachi serves as a coffee table. A conversational coffee table or side table for the living room. Three small drawers with metal pull handles span the brazier bottom. Makes quite the statement as the fire pit table is finished on all four sides with the drawers moving fore and aft on either side.
