The Hollywood film, Entrapment (1999, Jon Amiel), starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery, features Asian art. Specifically, the scene in which viewers are introduced to the personal home, err, castle of the master art thief in Sean Connery’s lead character.
The chacters fly in by helicopter overhead a magnificent stone building, Castle Duart on the Island of Mull. Catherine Zeta Jones’ character enters through the wood doors and is taken aback, impressed by the collectibles and artifacts in the living room.
The camera pans past the staircase to the living quarters upstairs displaying a beautiful Antique Korean Chest.
“Oh wow. This is quite a collection.”
“Thank you. Most people buy art to show it off, I collect art for me.”
In the next scene, there is an Official’s Hat accent chair in the bedroom.
The set decorators did a fabulous job and this is just one of many Hollywood films with set decorations featuring Asian art. When a home, like many Bay Area modern home builds featuring concrete and straight lines, is cold (a stone castle qualifies), an organic wood accent warms the space, creating character and depth, and invites the dweller in. This film does a great job at illustrating this concept.
Come into the stores and take some organic Fuyu persimmons home with you. Concord sun grown! Crisp like an apple, but with a mild and butter-like sweetness. We are happy to share the harvest!
Dr. Shymala Harris, of Oakland, is a Rosewood House life customer, acquiring a number of items from the Rosewood House collection throughout the past years. Mrs. Harris was always proud of her daughter, Kamala, as she graduated law school and became the San Francisco District Attorney. Kamala is all grown up; here she is with Heidi and Jane, owner and lead designer of Rosewood House, in Uptown Oakland.
Kamala is in the news for her newly published book: “Smart on Crime: A Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer” and is seeking the 2010 California Attorney General title.
Being the pioneer in custom furniture design handmade in solid rosewood, we see our designs emulated and copied, for the past few decades. Check out the following companies that use our original photography directly from the Rosewood House portfolio and claim the product as their own. It’s one thing to copy designs, it’s another level when a company claims its own furniture prowess using photos from other designers. Looking at their actual offerings, it was evident the companies have sub-standard rosewood furniture that are discontinued styles from two decades ago – they are not designers nor do they carry their own line of furniture. Rosewood House authentic rosewood furniture is only available from Rosewood House.
Below: company is based in Okinawa, Japan. They use photos of our step tansu in Marin, writing desk, chair and stool in Pleasanton, dining table in Menlo Park, dresser in Oakland, and PC working home office desk in Concord, CA.
Both companies have been notified of their copyright infringement and acknowledged their copyright infringement. They use catalog and pamphlet images, discontinued in the 1980s. These copyright infringing companies do business by removing logos from other companies furniture photos and marketing it as their own – caveat emptor.
Authentic and genuine Rosewood House furniture is sold only through our two stores. Our furniture is not sold or distributed through drop shipping, middlemen, third parties. We have unique product IDs that are individual to each of our sold items and our furniture collection is hand stamped with its own Rosewood House signature, signifying its authenticity. Each piece is backed by our service and commitment to our customers, with a reputation built over forty years.
If you have any questions or comments about authenticity and original design, we’d be happy to hear from you, contact us by email or phone. Thank you – Wilson, Rosewood House.

Olivia “Via” San Mateo, owner and letter press designer of Olive-Route in Berkeley, California:
My mom used to work for an Oriental furniture store [Rosewood House] when I was growing up so I was surrounded by lots of rosewood furniture and antiques imported from China. Attending architecture school also started my love for anything Mid-Century. My aesthetic is a combination of these two strong influences: Asian & Mid-Century. Since most of my furniture tends to be darker and heavier, I lighten it up with the details such as airy chars, white vases, light walls.

Wilson Tai, designer at Rosewood House, was invited to speak at the Diablo Woodworkers HQ in Pleasant Hill in April 2009. The presentation, “Rosewood House: Concept to Manufacture to Delivery,” included case studies of special order custom design furniture by Rosewood House and the behind-the-scenes design process with the customer. It also revealed the design & marketing of luxury. The presentation pulled a great turnout, capacity exceeded the number of seats for those in attendance. Wilson reported the group exhibited great passion for wood and quality handmade wood creations, with excellent questions and was pleased with the Diablo Woodworkers experience.
The follow-up to the presentation was the Diablo Woodworkers shop tour at the Rosewood House, Saturday, April 18th.
